ABOUT

To truly understand what Soldier On is about and why our mission is so vital, you need to hear directly from our President and CEO Jack Downing.

Jack can explain not only what changing the end of the story means, but what Soldier On has done under his leadership to make that goal a reality.

Nuts And Bolts
Soldier On is a non-profit organization governed by a full-time CEO/president and a volunteer board of directors. We work in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies to provide veterans with both shelter and support within an environment that offers dignity, integrity and, most of all, hope.

Grounded In Integrity
At our core, Soldier On is about integrity: The integrity of veteran residents, the integrity of staff, and the integrity of our commitment to work tirelessly to improve the lives of veterans in the community at large. We assist veterans with both picking up the pieces of their lives and filling in the gaps that public agencies do not address.

Making A Difference
Since Jack Downing took over as president and CEO in 2001, Soldier On has substantially increased the number of veterans we serve and the scope of services we deliver. We have also made marked improvements in many key areas.

THE MISSION

Soldier On’s mission is expanding. We have been assisting homeless veterans since 1994. Now, however, we are moving beyond simply offering a response to veteran homelessness to providing a permanent solution. With our Veterans Village projects, we will offer formerly homeless veterans a chance to own their homes — more often than not for the first time in their lives.

Our work still begins with getting homeless veterans off the streets.

Homeless veterans need an interwoven effort that provides a safety net of housing, meals, health care, substance abuse aftercare and mental health counseling. They also need job assessment, training and placement assistance. Our mission at Solider On is to offer a continuum of care that includes immediate and long-term housing, treatment and recovery for addiction, food, and clothing, as well as medical, counseling and job-related services.

Because government money for homeless veterans is currently limited and serves only one in 10 veterans in need, it is critical that private groups such as Soldier On reach out to help provide the support, resources and opportunities most Americans take for granted: housing, employment and health care.

Soldier On has a record of success, helping hundreds of veterans  get their lives back on track. But to continue providing this critical support to veterans, we need the ongoing support of the community.
