The former police training academy in Agawam is being converted into housing for veterans. In a ceremony on Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray officially transferred ownership of the property to the Soldier On organization. Jack Downey, the President of Soldier On says this is an important day, "This represents permanent, affordable housing with services that will be their home for the rest of their lives." Veterans will not only live here but also own their property, "A lot of people can rent but you know you never really own, and it makes me feel like a human being again that I'm going to have an opportunity to actually own something," says veteran Lenny Costa. Samuel Bennett works with homeless veterans, "I think it's a great opportunity for homeless veterans to be allowed to own their own place." The former training center building will be converted into 40 studio apartments. Eventually, another 80 units will be built on property in back of the main building. Congressman Richard Neal says this is an example of how we should honor and not forget our veterans, "We need to be reminded of the contract we offered them when they went off, not just the pat on the back."
