AGAWAM - A nonprofit organization that plans to create apartments for formerly homeless veterans is buying a former state facility in western Massachusetts for $1.

On Tuesday, the state will convey its former Western Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Center property in Agawam to the "Soldier On" group.

That Northampton-based organization plans to build about 40 studio apartments and eventually hopes to build another 80 to 85 units for veterans there, too.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, Congressman Richard Neal and several other officials plan to attend a ceremony Tuesday to officially convey the land to Soldier On.

Gov. Deval Patrick signed legislation this summer authorizing the sale.

Soldier On provides shelter, counseling, job training and education for homeless veterans.
