Many of our residents battle with mental health problems, substance abuse of some form or another, and often a dual diagnosis of both. In light of this, spirituality plays a vital role in the sobriety and sanity of our residents in addition to the many other services that we provide. When Soldier On made the decision to register as a faith based organization in 2002, it was a natural outflow of the participation that many of men and women in the 12 Step Recovery programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Much of the spirituality at Soldier On is based on the second and third steps of Alcoholics Anonymous which state that “we came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity,” and “we made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him”
While we encourage our residents to be involved with some sort of faith community, Soldier On does not formally endorse any one religion, and our residences show no outward symbols of religiosity. However, inside of our buildings and out in the community around us, many of our veterans are recovering and thriving in life by living out their personal faith through love and service to others, believing that their faith is better reflected by actions and not merely by words.
