Nationally, services for women veterans are increasingly needed. Soldier On has been providing such services since 2005. Jackie K’s House is a transitional housing program designed for homeless women veterans that provides a safe, structured environment that allows time to regain stability. The program is located on our Leeds, MA campus. The women live in a duplex cottage, which houses 12 women in two double bedrooms and eight single bedrooms.
The cottage is peer-led and the women share in cooking, chores, recreational planning and gardening. A three person resident committee coordinates the management of the household including transportation, supplies, maintenance requests, and the grocery shopping.
Participants are offered an opportunity to develop new coping skills, education and employment and access to affordable housing and limited equity home-ownership options. The women are expected to participate in several group activities designed to build self-awareness, communication and coping methods based on proven practices.
This includes weekly:
-House meetings to negotiate the practicalities of maintaining a household
-Recovery support groups that develop self awareness, communication, conflict resolution and anger management skills
-Writing groups that allow residents to explore the beauty and value of self-expression
-Skill groups that harvest emotional self-regulation and self-care skills
Jackie K’s house is a program for women, by women.
